New Edinburgh / Lindenlea Real Estate Listings & New Edinburgh / Lindenlea Profile
Home to Rideau Hall, the grounds of the Governor General of Canada, and 24 Sussex, the Official Residence of the Prime Minister of Canada, New Edinburgh is a vibrant community located minutes from Ottawa’s downtown. New Edinburgh was founded by Thomas McKay (one of the Rideau Canal lock system builders) in 1829. Many of the streets in the area are named after Thomas’ relatives, including Keefer, Thomas, John, Charles and McKay Streets. The neighbourhood is characterized by charming character homes and is well-loved by families.
Residents can walk to downtown Ottawa or enjoy the many lovely parks in the neighbourhood, including Stanley Park (famous for its off-leash dog area) and New Edinburgh Park. The National Capital Commission (NCC)-run Rideau Falls Park (7.1 acres / 2.89 hectares) is another highlight, marking the spot where the Rideau River flows into the Ottawa River. Downtown Ottawa is also a short walk from the neighbourhood.
The Ottawa New Edinburgh Club is a member’s club in the area that offers tennis, rowing and sailing programs for both adults and children. Since 2000, The School of Dance has offered up dance classes. Just down the street, Union Street Kitchen Café offers amazing eats, from superb cookies to lunch foods and takeout.
New Edinburgh is bordered on one side by Rideau Hall, the grounds of the official residence of The Governor General of Canada. Here one can tour the residence, walk the grounds, attend themed events and skate on the Rideau Hall Skating Rink in the winter.
Adjacent neighbourhood Lindenlea is a smaller enclave that is also bordered by Rockcliffe Park and Beechwood Village, a hub of retail and restaurants. Family-owned Jacobsons offers gourmet delights, Mood Moss Flowers is a popular local florist and Muckleston & Brockwell butchery offers great cuts. Rassi Coiffure offers cuts of a different kind. Restaurants include the divine brothers-owned Fraser Café, The Royal Oak, The Scone Witch and Clocktower Brew Pub. Il Vagabondo has been a Beechwood Village staple for over 25 years! Groceries are easy at the conveniently located Metro.
Both Lindenlea and New Edinburgh attract families, diplomats and businesspeople who want to live an easy distance from downtown and local artists who are enchanted by these picturesque neighbourhoods. Renowned Canadian landscape artist Gordon Harrison is just one artist who makes his studio there.
Local schools include private French-Immersion Junior High School MacDonald-Cartier Academy and fabulous Fern Hill School, which offers preschool to Grade 8. The Lindenlea Commuity Centre offers tons of programming for the whole family. Tennis, yoga and taekwondo are just some of the activities on offer. Lindenlea Park is also a draw and it even has public tennis courts!
We love New Edinburgh and Lindenlea for their warm and inclusive community feels, as well as their proximity to historically important Ottawa building and Ottawa’s downtown. The neighbourhood is even walking distance to Parliament Hill, The National Arts Centre, The National Gallery of Canada and the ByWard Market.
