Rothwell Heights Real Estate Listings & Rothwell Heights Profile
A calm oasis, rustic and rural in feel but geographically urban, Rothwell Heights is a well-beloved and luxurious neighbourhood. Situated at one of Ottawa’s highest elevations, this neighbourhood offers views of the Ottawa River and Gatineau Hills along the strip we call the Rothwell Ridge due to its high elevation. Davidson Drive, Rothwell Drive and Cedar Road are three of the streets that offer such views.
The neighbourhood of Rothwell Heights was developed mid-1950s from the land of Ben Rothwell’s farm. Due to its close proximity to the National Research Council (NRC), the area was a draw for researchers from the NRC, including scientists and engineers. The neighbourhood is positioned close to the Ottawa River and is home to the highest concentration of mid-century homes in Ottawa. Though some of these modernist homes have since been demolished, many remain to this day. The lots in the area tend to be spacious and meandering and look onto tranquil, tree-lined streets. Space and treed views abound, making homes feel rural and private.
Rothwell Heights is only 15 minutes’ drive from downtown Ottawa and is close to various restaurants and shops along Montreal Road, including the fantastic family-run Pilos Restaurant and Host India restaurant. Get groceries just 5 minutes from home at Farm Boy. Montreal Road is also home to the Montfort Hospital, a fantastic Francophone teaching hospital that has been revitalized and expanded in recent years. As such, Rothwell Heights is also a draw for physicians and other hospital staff. Families are also drawn to the area due to the spacious living it allows. Many of the neighbourhood homes have pools and great backyards. There are also local parks, including Kindle Court Park, Birdland Park and Quarry Park. Just 6 minutes’ drive away is a shopping complex along Ogilvie Road that is home to Scotiabank Theatre, Loblaws, Chapters and a variety of restaurants and other shops. Pine View Golf Course is also less than 10 minutes’ drive from Rothwell Heights. Camelot Golf & Country Club is also a short drive away.
In addition to easy proximity to amenities, residents will also appreciate the high quality of education provided by local schools. Colonel By Secondary School – which offers the International Baccalaureate Programme – is one of the City’s top schools and is located in the adjacent Beacon Hill neighbourhood. Colonel By is well loved for its successful academic and athletic programs. Thomas D’Arcy McGee Catholic School is also nearby, as is Henry Munro Middle School. Rothwell Heights is easily reachable via the Sir George-Étienne Cartier Parkway, which provides access to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum as well as picturesque lookouts and trails along the Ottawa River. These trails make up part of the Capital Pathway network, the National Capital Commission’s (NCC) 600-kilometre-plus network of paths (372 miles). Providing phenomenal views and recreation, these trails are one of our favourite things about the City. The Parkway also provides direct access to Rockcliffe Park, where many local children attend private schools Ashbury College and Elmwood School.
Given its tranquil setting and unique topography, Rothwell Heights is a fantastic family-oriented neighbourhood that offers homes on large lots overlooking beautiful tree-lined streets.
